BACKGROUND
The Namibia Economic Society (NES) was  founded on 24 April 1999.  This marked  the culmination of a process which drew together all those interested in  advancing awareness and discussion of economic issues.

Prior to the formalization of the NES the Namibia  Economic Working Group (NEWG), which was formed in 1993 with the financial  assistance of the Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation provided a forum for economic  dialogue.  This was however a loose  network of individuals.  The decision was  taken to create a formal institutional framework that would draw in professional  economists, social scientists, institutions and any other individual interested  in furthering the debate and general understanding of economic issues.
